Kingdom of Aeristine
The Walled City of Burke
The Walled City of Burke is the seat of government for the Duchy of Eramitos, a fief of the Kingdom of Aeristine. Ruled with a firm grasp by his Grace, Duke Stephan Eramitos, the Walled city and its surrounding lands are the central hub for commerce, law, and military strength in the region. This city is home to approximately 100,000 people. The Wall, as it is known, surrounds the Citadel of the Duke, and encompasses the privileged Noble District, the Scholars’ and Temple District, and the Artisans’ Quarter.
It is a partition that not only dissects the lands of the city, but also its populace – only about 4,000 live within the wall, or In-wall, as it is said. There is also a secondary wall, called the Mid-wall, which further divides the city, containing most of the commerce areas. Many of the Outwallers, as they’re known, aspire to one day be included among the elites and nobles of those residing In-wall. Others sneer in contempt of those who dwell within the walls – usually those who have, too-many-times, felt the lash of a nobles riding crop, or been a guest of the stocks for failing to bow as an unlanded lord passed by.
The Duchy of Eramitos is a land whose populace is divided into several castes, each with its own distinct levels of respectability and protection under the law. Transition between the castes is difficult, but not impossible. A popular tale says that the Duke’s Seneschal was once an orphan who rose through the ranks to his position of great prominence.
